Friday, September 6

Entry:

When you arrive at the entrance plaza, tell the staff member your name and that you are participating in the Southeastern Conference on Historic Sites Archaeology.

Tour:

We will meet in front of the Lowcountry Center (1 on map) by 3:30 for the tour of Laurel (38GE196-38GE201). Please wear sturdy walking shoes or boots for the tour as we will be walking. A hat and insect repellent are recommended.

We will travel north on the backroads of Brookgreen Gardens to Laurel Hill, a late-18th-19th century rice plantation that has extant defensive earthworks, a brick rice mill chimney, canals, a barge slip, and tabby and brick structure ruins. Palmer will lead the group and point out features first documented by Leslie Drucker in her 1980 survey and where he has been working with students and volunteers for several field seasons to learn more about the lives of the Captive Africans at Laurel Hill.

There is no additional fee for the tour. Donations will be accepted and will go to the Student Fieldwork Scholarship of CCU’s Department of Anthropology and Geography and SECHSA’s funds.

Reception:

The conference opening reception will be at Harvest Restaurant (2 on map) from 6-8 pm. The reception features food from Harvest and a cash bar.

Saturday, September 7

Entry:

Because the conference begins before Brookgreen Gardens opens to the public at 9:30, you will need to enter through the after-hours gate. This is the small road immediately south of the main entrance, with a small guard shack and gate arm barrier. Stop at the gate and tell the safety officer your name and that you are participating in the Southeastern Conference on Historic Sites Archaeology. If no safety officer is present, press the button on the intercom by the barrier and inform the safety office of your name and that you are participating in the Southeastern Conference on Historic Sites Archaeology.

Conference Sessions:

We are meeting in the Ron Daise Auditorium at the Lowcountry Center (1 on map).

Parking:

If you do not want to make the short walk from the main parking lot to the Lowcountry Center, there are limited paved parking spaces at the Lowcountry Center, and you can also park in the unpaved lot in back of the Center, across from “Bethea’s Garden” (large, fenced-in, vegetable garden).

Lunch, snacks, restroom locations:

The conference includes a box lunch and you can purchase other food and beverages from the Courtyard Café. Restrooms at the Lowcountry Center are located in the corner of the center opposite the Daise Auditorium.
